FLORIDA LIONS CAMP
for the
VISUALLY HANDICAPPED

The birth of the Florida Lions Camp began when Mel Carver, a Lion from Miami, took a friend's blind child horseback riding in 1973. Carver watched as the child placed her arms around the animal's neck and hugged it. "What are you doing," Carver asked the girl. She replied, "I'm loving this horse, seeing it with my hands. I've never seen a horse before." Mel Carver found that this was an all too uncommon experience for visually handicapped children.

The facility has come a long way from its fish-camp origins. The restaurant-bar serves as the mess hall and kitchen. The construction of the pool and gym impart a health club atmosphere and bring new physical challenges to the handicapped campers. The camp also has a crafts building, a corral, horse stalls, a fishing dock, administrative housing, a laundry room, an athletic playing field, a nature walk, a playground, a log cabin office, and a rustic chapel.
