"The Gift of Mobility" for the blind is the goal of Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc., located on 25 park-like acres at Palmetto. The school was incorporated in the State of Florida in 1982.
Southeastern Guide Dogs is one of 10 Guide Dog training facilities in the continental United States and is the only such center in the south.
The sole purpose of Southeastern Guide Dogs is to provide blind individuals with highly trained Guide Dogs which will enhance their mobility skills and make it possible for them to travel with greater confidence, safety and dignity. The training includes travel situations unique to the southern states. By having established a Florida based breeding program, Southeastern Guide Dogs is more acclimated to the southern environment, thus enabling each Guide Dog Team to enjoy a longer and healthier working relationship.
The Guide Dog and equipment, as well as instruction and training at the school, are provided to the blind individual free of charge.
To many blind individuals, a Guide Dog provides a means of mobility. To many, a Guide Dog means quicker, safer travel...and most importantly, it means independence with the freedom to travel by oneself without sighted assistance.
