Who Are Lions?

Why Should I Become a Lion?

Since 1920, local Lions Clubs have offered people just like you the opportunity to give something back to their communities. From involving members in projects as local as cleaning up an area park or as far reaching as bringing sight to the world's blind. Lions clubs have always embraced those committed to building a brighter future for their community.

Today, over 1.3 million men and women from 205 countries and geographical locations around the world have expanded their focus to help meet the ever increasing needs of our global community. Our faces and our programs may have changed to meet new needs and greater demands, but our mission has never wavered, "We Serve".

As Lions our goal is to make a difference - and we have - over and over again with programs that succeed. Service to people who are blind and are visually impaired has always been one of our most significant programs. Lions operate the vast majority of the eye banks through out the world, with three here in Florida. (Miami, Tampa & Jacksonville)

Volunteering as a Lion can make a difference for you too. How you choose to spend your time is an important consideration. We believe that time invested with a Lions Club yields an invaluable return, an added dimension to your personal and professional life. While providing the framework for you to serve your community, a Lions Club also offers opportunities for individual growth.

Leadership Ability - Whether you lead a meeting, spearhead a fund raising event or organize a project, Lions Clubs can provide you the opportunities to learn the skills that get the job done. Increased self-confidence and self-esteem flow naturally from making things happen when you work with your Lions Club.

Business Skills - You can improve your public speaking and presentation skills while you communicate with others on important social issues. First hand experience in budgeting projects, planning activities and motivating others in your Lions Club can also enhance your abilities.

Networking - Interact with other professionals who have come together through Lions Clubs to work toward common goals and to have a meaningful impact on your community.

Yes, we are a volunteer organization under an International Association, where we enjoy fellowship with other Lions, develop our skills in leadership capabilities, and dedicate part of our free time to helping those in need, all over the world, while making our individual communities a better place to live.

The clubs here in Florida sponsor unknown thousands of local projects, from eye screening, to little league teams and parks, to scholarships, to testing for glaucoma and diabetes, to hearing testing and aids, to guide dogs for the visually impaired and blind, to hearing dogs for those with hearing imparities, to building a ramp at a home where one is needed, to providing clothing for the homeless, and the list goes on and on as long as there is a need. Lions Clubs are not limited in what they can do, it all depends on the local club and their abilities and membership.

And the greatest part of being a member of the world's largest community service organization, is that 100% of all funds received from the public are returned to the public through community projects and service. Never are any of the funds used for the purpose of the clubs administrative needs, as this is done by the members through membership fees.
